The Winona State Cycling Club was started in January 2006. After the WSU Bike Club fizzled out of existence, the WSU Cycling Club was started so that Winona students would be able to compete within the National Collegiate Cycling Association. Team clothing was designed, licenses were purchased, and by April, miles were being driven to the first race. The initial team was Matt Appleman, Marc Binney, and Aaron Hefty.

 Past Races

Durand Road Race, 4/21/2007

With a bar-none, hands-down, and extremely-hyphenated tradition, Marc B. got a flat tire at Durand and was unable to finish. Matt had is best Durand ever placing 14th in the 4/5 race. He got dropped from the main group of 10 or so and formed a hardworking chase group (which was super fun)! Tyler hung on for a good ride in the Cat. 5's getting 29th. Now these are the kinds of races we need (except for the flat tire). Obviously Collegiate Racing isn't the safest or most effective way of racing for the WSU'ers.

Good luck and bad.

U of MN Crit, 4/15/2007

This race was fast right off the start. Chris and Tyler were dropped early. Matt was brought down hard in a crash sprinting for the first primes. Again, better luck next year WSU ;}

Northfield Team Time Trial, 4/14/2007: RESULTS HERE

There were four of us: Chris C, Tyler R, Marc B, and Matt A. We had actually done quite a bit of practice for the TTT and we were very excited for it. Tyler was extremely tired after completing 3 of the 4 laps (he took a nap on the dirt behind the van for about an hour). In the TTT we didn't finish last, we beat 1 mens team and 3 womens teams! Good Job TEAM :] We even averaged 21.2 mph!

Northfield Road Race, 4/14/2007.

It was a beautiful day for a road race. The course had a mile or two of gravel. Well, in typical WSU style Matt's water bottle managed to get lodged in his rear wheel (ripping a spoke) and causing Marc and about 10 other racers to crash. It was a bad race for everyone, need I say more? YES, I will say more! Tyler did put in a fantastic effort and completed the race only 1 lap behind the "group."

-----In the Spring Semester of 2007, the cycling club started doing Wednesday night Time Trials. These were an effort to provide intense training for races and track each riders improvment throughout the years.

------The first race the WSU Cycling Club participated in was the Durand Road Race in Durand, Wisconsin on April 22, 2006. The Durand Road Race has the up and down hilly terrain that western Wisconsin is known for. Results: Aaron Hefty-26th place, Marc Binney-31, and Matt Appleman-42. Out of the 51 riders that started 44 finished. Better luck next time.

------WSU's first collegiate race was hosted by the Univ. of Minnesota. A road race on Saturday and a crit on Sunday (April 29/30). Two students, Matt Appleman and Marc Binney had their priorities straight and made it to the race (which was the weekend before finals). Unfortunatley for everybody that raced that weekend, the weather was "bad." "Bad" = 40 degrees and raining with 25 mph winds. Matt and Marc went on to finish the road race, and only Marc finished the crit. It was cold and wet, but it was still fun. Road Race Results: Marc Binney-14, Matt Appleman-16. There was a total of 21 entries for the race (21 too many given the weather).
